Fathom is the notetaker people recommend when they want a generous free plan and a recap that arrives in half a minute. Unlimited recordings and transcripts, on a real free tier, is rare in this category. That is why the brand search is so clean.
The complaints are narrower. People who bounce off Fathom usually liked the recap. They ran into a bot that announces itself on a client call, a free plan that is unlimited until the AI you wanted caps at five calls, a bot-free desktop mode that is still Mac and English, or an auto-join that sometimes does not join at all.

What the search data actually shows
Semrush's July 2026 snapshot puts fathom.ai at about 656,000 visits, up 13% from June. Direct traffic is about 52%. Google is about 28%. After Fathom, people go to fathom.video and Typeform.
The organic keywords are branded and product-shaped: fathom notetaker at 6,600 monthly searches, fathom note taker at 2,900, fathom at 60,500 (a word that also means other things), fathom video, and fathom login. fathom ai has sat near 9,900 in earlier 2026 pulls. Brand searches go to Fathom. The surrounding SERP is "is Fathom free," "Fathom vs Otter," and alternatives pages.
Reddit and G2 are kinder to Fathom than to Otter. The praise is the free recording. The complaints are the bot, the five-summary wall, and the days the bot does not show up.

Language support splits by capture mode
Fathom's language story is two products wearing one name.
The classic bot path advertises 38 transcript languages. The new desktop experience, Fathom 3.0, is more honest in the help center. As of the April 2026 upgrade note, bot-free capture is for Mac users with English-language meetings. Windows is "coming soon." Non-English meetings do not get the upgrade banner.

If you wanted Fathom because the bot was getting you kicked off enterprise calls, the bot-free mode is the answer, and it is currently an English Mac answer. A German Teams call on Windows still goes through the participant list. That is a sharper language limit than Granola's ten desktop languages, because it is tied to the capture path you switched to for social reasons.
Anarlog's language settings do not require English to use device capture. Coverage still depends on the model you pick. Test the languages you actually speak.
The bot is the most common complaint
"Fathom Notetaker" in the participant list is the feature and the friction. On an internal standup, nobody cares. On a pitch, a board call, or a candidate interview, the join/leave announcement is the thing Reddit and sales forums call loud.
Fathom added a recording notice you can post to chat, and the 3.0 tray lets you pick Capture Off, Transcript Only, Audio Only, or Audio & Video with a bot. Those are the right controls. The default for most teams is still the visible bot, because that is how unlimited video recording works.

Failed auto-joins sit next to that. G2 reviewers describe the bot no-showing on the free plan, or dropping a long Zoom. There is no local fallback. If Fathom misses the call, the recap does not exist.
Unlimited recording is not unlimited AI
Fathom's free plan is genuinely unlimited for recording, transcription, storage, and clips. The AI people came for is not. Advanced summaries and selected AI features cap at five calls a month on free. After that you have the tape and the raw transcript. Premium is about $16 to $20 per user per month depending on annual billing. Team and Business pricing climbs from there, and agencies with several domains feel it.
That is a clearer wall than Otter's minutes, and a less hidden one than Fireflies credits. People still call the free plan "unlimited" in Slack, then hit call six. If you wanted Fathom because it was free, confirm whether you needed the recap or the recording.
Training is the quieter setting. Fathom says its AI subprocessors cannot train on customer data. Fathom itself may use de-identified meeting data to improve its models unless you opt out. Teams can set that org-wide. Individuals have to find the toggle. Fathom stores data in the United States.
When these frustrations matter, and when they do not
Stay with Fathom if you want unlimited tape, you are fine with a visible bot on most calls, English covers the week, and five free recaps or a Premium seat matches how you work. The Semrush brand queries exist because that deal is real.
Look elsewhere when the recurring complaints match your week:
- you need bot-free capture on Windows, or in a language other than English
- a Notetaker in the participant list is a client problem
- you need more than five advanced summaries without paying
- you meet on Android or in a room with no video call
- you need the record on your machine, or a non-US residency story
